Holocaust Education Week, the world's most comprehensive Holocaust education event, had a most successful 28th year, running from Sunday, November 2 until Sunday, November 9, 2008. With well over 30 000 participants in over 170 programs, we experienced record attendance and a great community response!

Coordinated by the Holocaust Centre of Toronto, UJA Federation, the annual program encompasses timely and thought-provoking educational and cultural programs, including a series of compelling, first-hand testimonies from survivors. To reach as many diverse groups as possible, programs and speakers are presented in a wide array of venues throughout the Greater Toronto Area and regional communities across Ontario. Programs were offered in churches, synagogues, university and college campuses, libraries, theatres and schools.

In 2008 we presented over 170 free programs at 100 venues throughout the Greater Toronto Area, as well as in 12 communities outside the GTA. The involvement of numerous local churches further enhanced our mandate of education and awareness. The participation of 42 schools ensured that we are communicating our important message to students, Canada’s future leaders. The week was a great success and we are gratified by the wide support and positive reaction we received from our community.

We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the community for your participation in the 28th annual Holocaust Education Week. We deeply value your commitment to the annual event, which contributed considerably to its success – without your support, we would not be able to fulfill our mission to teach and safeguard the lessons of the Holocaust. We look forward to your future participation in the upcoming 29th annual Holocaust Education Week.

Save the date for the upcoming Holocaust Education Week! The 29th annual, this year’s HEW will run from November 1 – 11, 2009. A full list of programs will be added to this site in the future, so please check back! For additional information about HEW, contact Mary Siklos at 416.635.2883 x5301.

We look forward to seeing you at our future events.

Yours sincerely,

"Holocaust" is a Greek translation of the Hebrew word "Olla" meaning "a sacrifice which is wholly consumed by fire". Another expression frequently used for the Holocaust is the Hebrew
word "Shoah," and in Yiddish "Khurbn,"which was the term applied to the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem 2000 years ago.
